Landfill Expansion Proceeding Following EA Approval

Clean Harbors hopes to break ground on a $10-million vertical expansion of its Telfer Rd. landfill in early September.

Company spokesman Michael Parker says they expect to receive environmental compliance approval from the Ministry of the Environment within the next month or so.

The expansion will add up to five million cubic metres of space, extending the operating life of the landfill near Brigden by 25 years.

It will grow vertically by up to nine metres.

It was announced late Friday that the environment minister had approved the environmental assessment for the expansion subject to conditions.

There must be continued discussion with area residents during construction, the Community Good Neighbours Program must be maintained and monitoring programs updated to reflect the additional capacity.
