Unattended Candle Causes Apartment Fire

Fire has damaged an apartment unit and other parts of a five storey building on Afton Dr.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services responded to a reported structure fire at 1150 Afton Dr. at 2:49am on Sunday. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered smoke coming from the fifth floor of the building.

They were able to quickly contain the fire to the apartment of origin with heat, smoke and water damage to other parts of the building.

There were no injuries.

The extent of damage to the building and its contents was not immediately known.

Fire officials say the cause of the blaze was an unattended candle and they remind the public to never leave an open flame unattended.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
