Investigation Continues At Green Electron Plant

Ontario Labour Ministry personnel continue to try to work through safety issues raised by several local trade unions employed at Eastern Power's Green Electron plant under construction near Courtright.

The unions claim Eastern Power has been bringing unlicensed outside workers into the gas-powered plant in contravention of stop-work orders in effect since last Thursday.

Pipefitters Local 663 Business Manager Ross Tius says the ministry is taking their concerns seriously, bringing in an expert trainer from Ontario Power Generation to try to implement at "lockout/tagout" policy.

Tius says Eastern Power has no Health and Safety Committee and concerns raised by workers have led to dismissals including two general foremen.

The ministry is also ordering a "one key-one lock" policy but concerns remain that the company will not follow the directive.

200 local tradespeople have not been on site now for a week.
