Former Sarnia Councillor Passes Away

Former Clearwater and Sarnia councillor Don Hislop has passed away at the age of 89.

Hislop passed away peacefully on Thursday at St. Joseph’s Hospice, after a struggle with cancer.

As well as serving as a councillor, Hislop graduated from the University of Toronto in chemical engineering and worked with Imperial Oil in Sarnia until he retired in 1986.

During his tenure with the city, Hislop he was active in spearheading and maintaining the Howard Watson Nature Trail.

He is survived by his wife Mary of 65 years, his children John, Jamie, Mary Ellen, Graham and Robert, as well as his nine grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Smith Funeral Home in Sarnia will welcome friends and family for a visitation on December 13 between 1pm and 4pm. A memorial will also take place at on December 14 at 11am, with a private family interment ceremony at Blackwell Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sarnia Lambton Golden K Legacy Fund are requested.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
