Warm Start To Winter

It may not feel like it, but Tuesday is the first day of winter.

Temperatures have been balmy throughout the fall and we've even seen some record breaking highs in Sarnia-Lambton.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says we're likely going to have a green Christmas. He says that trend has become increasingly common in recent years.

"To look at the Sarnia area itself for the full period of record, the chance of a white Christmas from 1955 to present is about 60 per cent. But, if you only look at the last 20 years or so the chance of a white Christmas in Sarnia has dropped down to about 40 per cent," says Coulson.

"So really it seems to be a bit of a trend, definitely in the last couple of decades to having more and more Christmases where it's green as opposed to white."

While the mild conditions are great for holiday travellers, Coulson warns that fog could be a factor at times.

The forecast highs for the next few days are in the 5C to 12C degree range. The temperature is expected to be around 5C Christmas day.

The average temperature for this time of year is around the freezing mark and it's possible this December will be the warmest on record.
