Environment Canada says Sarnia is on pace and will be breaking a record for the mildest December in the area.
Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says as of December 30, the average temperature for the month was 4.3 C, well above the normal long-term average temperature of minus 1.8 C.
The current long-term average record for Sarnia is 2.2 C set back in 2006.
He says the mild month was partly due to individual record breaking highs throughout December.

The warmer weather was a result of a strong El Nino event, when warmer than normal waters occur in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America.
Coulson says the warmer weather will continue into the new year, with temperatures likely in the plus single digits.
