Winter Tires Encouraged

With winter weather upon us, the Lambton Safe Roads Committee is stressing the importance of installing winter tires on your vehicle.

Chair Kelley Elliott says winter tires are much better and safer than all season tires.

She says winter tires can shorten breaking distance by up to 25 per cent.

"They tend to offer better traction, especially below 7 C," says Elliott. "They contain a flexible rubber compound that helps them to stay soft and pliable."

Elliott says it's important to look for tires with the mountain snowflake symbol, and to make sure they're installed on all four wheels.

In addition, check the air pressure and tread to make sure the tires are safe for driving.

To check road conditions, drivers can call 511 or visit www.mto.gov.on.ca.
