CRA Phone Scam Resurfaces

With tax season upon us, Sarnia police are warning of another Canada Revenue Agency phone scam making the rounds.

Constable John Sottosanti says the caller advises the victim that they owe back taxes and will be arrested and charged if they don't act immediately.

He says this isn't how the CRA conducts business.

"What's happening is, people will see on their screen that the call is from a 613 number, which is the Ottawa area code," says Sottosanti.

"Unfortunately, that's not necessarily the case. Through the technology that exists out there, they can mimic other phone numbers to make it look like it's coming from a certain region. This can make it very difficult for police agencies."

Sottosanti stresses the importance of never giving out your personal information. If you've already given out information via telephone, contact Sarnia police.

To report any suspicious calls, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
