Province Looks To License Home Inspectors

The Ontario government says it plans to introduce legislation aimed at regulating the home inspection industry sometime this year.

Owner of Bluewater Property Consultants Inc. in Sarnia Bill Mullen says the changes will protect homeowners from becoming potential victims, requiring home inspectors to be licensed.

Mullen says he is certified, but most of his clients don't even ask to see his qualifications.

"Consumers should know who they are dealing with and if you go to a doctor or a lawyer you know darn well they have gone through some pretty rigorous training and examination," says Mullen.

"With home inspectors, because we're dealing with your biggest purchase ever, unfortunately in almost 25 years in practice in Sarnia I have been asked for proof of my certification once. That's a pretty sad commentary when you think about it."

Currently, anyone in Ontario can call themselves a home inspector regardless of whether they've completed any sort of professional training.
