New Trees To Support Mobile Market

Scouts Canada and the Inn of the Good Shepherd are teaming up with the city of Sarnia to plant fruit trees in city parks.

The trees will be planted through a $4,000 grant from Tree Canada's Edible Tree program.

Fruit from the trees will go to support the Inn's Mobile Market Program.

Executive Director Myles Vanni are hoping plant 40 to 50 trees.

"A lot would depend on the type of trees we're looking at, the type of fruit and when would be the best time to plant for them," says Vanni. "We don't get a lot in for a mobile market other than apples, so we're kind of leaning toward other varieties maybe cherries or plums, something a little more hearty and less labour intensive."

In 2015, the Mobile Market distributed about 6,200 lbs of fresh vegetables weekly from July to November.
