Shell Eco Marathon Kicks Off In Detroit

Two teams from Sarnia are in Detroit this weekend for the annual Shell Eco Marathon.

Students from Northern Highschool and Lambton College have been working for months to build energy efficient automobiles using a variety of fuel types.

Shell spokesman Randy Provencal says they're competing against thousands of other students.

He says they'll be testing the cars throughout the weekend to see who's is most eco-friendly.

"A lot of these are very innovative and futuristic looking vehicles that you wouldn't necessarily see on the street," says Provencal. "Nonetheless, I think the hope is that it can inspire students to seek other alternative energy sources or ways that we can be better stewards of the environment by using less energy."

Provencal says there's also a hands on area where people can learn about where energy comes from and how to use it more effectively.

The event runs throughout the day Friday and continues all weekend at the Cobo Centre in Detroit.
