Students Taught To Be Ready For Emergencies (VIDEO)

Firefighters, police and other first responders set up at Clearwater Arena Friday for the 11th annual Emergency Preparedness Day.

Over 1,500 students were expected to attend, which is considered one of the largest turnouts in the province.

Disaster Management Volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross Colin Pritchard says it's important young people know, in advance, what to do in the event of an emergency.

"Give them an idea of the concept of what happens in an emergency, so we're talking about the fact that you won't necessarily be evacuated to the same location as family," says Pritchard. "One parent could be on the other side of the city at work, you're at school, you might end up in three different places."

He recommends putting together an emergency supply kit with enough food, water and necessities to last three days.

Pritchard says the fires in Fort McMurray are a harsh reminder of how important it is to be prepared.

A detailed list of what should be included in an emergency kit is available at redcross.ca/ready.
