Sarnia Unofficially Sets Record Breaking Temperature

A record breaking temperature was unofficially set in Sarnia-Lambton Wednesday.

According to Environment Canada statistics, the mercury at Chris Hadfield airport hit 29.7 C (85.46 F) at 4pm, topping the past record of 28.6 C (83.48 F).

Weather Services Specialist Etienne Gregoire says temperatures have been warmer than normal for this time of year.

"It's not things we haven't seen before. We've seen these kinds of temperatures at the end of May, but it's definitely warmer than usual by about six or seven degrees," he says. "So it's a substantial difference from the normal values."

He believes the warmer weather will be sticking around for quite some time.

"There might be a little bit of moderation early next week, but still above normal even to start the new work week," says Gregoire.

A record high was nearly set Tuesday when the mercury reached 28.9 C (84.02 F), just one degree away of 30 C (86 F) set in 2007.
