Sarnia's Kinsmen Centre For Sale

Sarnia's Kinsmen Centre is to be listed for sale.

City council has declared the lands at 656 Lakeshore Rd. surplus and directed staff to proceed with its sale.

Councillor Bev MacDougall supported staffs recommendation.

"We can win on the front of some new building lots and expanded tax base for whatever we would use this land for after the fact of getting rid of the Kinsmen Centre," said MacDougall.

"Growing the tax base to me is an important thing for us to focus on. By letting this go, we could maybe start a more productive process of divesting ourselves of assets, potentially shrinking other assets, building up some resources and making for a sustainable parks and rec service delivery in our community moving forward."

Dave Boushy was the only councillor to oppose the recommendation .

The 8,600 sq. ft. former Oakwood elementary school was built in the 1950's and sits on 2 acres, by Baxter Park, near Colborne Rd.

City staff relocated the building's user-groups and tenants and closed the building because of mould and related safety concerns.

Repairs were estimated as high as $240,000.

The Kinsmen Club was considering revamping the centre to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kinsmen in Canada and the 90th anniversary of the local club in 4 years.
