Fruit Flies Close Petrolia Eye Clinic

The Pat Mailloux Eye Centre at CEE hospital Petrolia is closed, temporarily, because of bugs.

Procedures at the clinic for the month of August will be performed at the Sarnia hospital, after a small infestation of insects was found in one of the procedure rooms.

Bluewater Health VP of Operations Laurie Zimmer says fruit flies were discovered near a window sill over the last couple of weeks.

She says there was a thorough cleaning and pest control undertaken but that has not solved the problem.

"With our high standard of patient safety and care that is paramount to us, we felt it necessary to have the cases diverted to our Sarnia hospital so we can maintain our clinic services until we uncover the issue and resolve it as soon as possible," says Zimmer.

Zimmer says equipment is being moved this week to allow for more intensive cleaning and a thorough assessment to determine the cause.

She says the remainder of the Petrolia hospital is not affected and operations are continuing as normal.
