Walleye Fishing Derby

The Bluewater Anglers' annual walleye fishing derby is set for this weekend.

The overnight event gets underway at 6pm Friday evening, with weigh-ins scheduled for 10am Saturday at the hatchery in Pt. Edward.

Spokesman Brad Armstrong expects a lot of walleye to be caught.

"It's been a fantastic year for walleye," says Armstrong.

"The guys have been catching a tremendous number of fish, north of the Bluewater Bridge particularly but even in the river they've been doing quite well. They're on the smaller side so it might be a challenge to catch a big derby winning fish but the numbers are there and they are great for eating."

The boundaries on the St. Clair River range from Fawn Island to Grand Bend, and up the US side to Lexington.

Tickets for the shore and boat derby are $10 and can be purchased at Buck's Baits and the Outdoorsman.

There are cash prizes for the top 10 heaviest fish, with $500 going to the winner.
