Petrolia Independent Acquires Historic Herald

The Independent of Petrolia and Central Lambton has brought another newspaper into the fold.

Publisher Heather Wright has purchased the historic Thamesville Herald and plans to expand its coverage area to include Dresden and Bothwell.

The community newspaper, founded in 1886, has a circulation of about 900. It was purchased in late June but the sale was not finalized until Thursday July 28.

Wright says she covered Chatham-Kent as a reporter for a decade and lived in Dresden for much of that time.

"I am very excited to be able to tell the stories of these communities," says Wright. "While the people of Thamesville have seen their stories in their own community newspaper, it has been some time since Dresden and Bothwell have, and many people have already told me how excited they are to have their own community newspaper again. It's also a pleasure for me to continue the great tradition of this 130-year-old newspaper."

A staff of three will operate out of the former Thamesville town hall.

Wright says the first edition of the renewed and expanded Herald will hit the streets August 17.
