Petrolia Eye Centre Reopens Following Fruit Fly Ordeal

Bluewater Health's Pat Mailloux Eye Centre at Petrolia's CEE hospital reopens Tuesday.

The centre has been closed since the first week of August after a small number of fruit flies were discovered near a window sill in one of the procedure rooms.

"Maintenance work was completed last week and the team moved all of the equipment back over the weekend," says VP of Operations Laurie Zimmer.

Staff conducted a thorough cleaning and undertook pest control measures during their investigation, but were unable to uncover a source.

Zimmer says upgrades have been completed to hopefully prevent it from happening again.

She says the main doors and entrance into the procedure room were sealed, as were the walls and the ceiling to prevent any opportunity of external entry.

Zimmer says 150 scheduled cataract procedures were performed in Sarnia during the closure.
