Petrolia Celebrates 150 Years

Petrolia celebrates a trio of milestones this year.

In three weeks beginning November 23,1866, oil was struck at the Kings well, starting Petrolia's first oil boom. Petrolia was incorporated December 13 and the railway spur opened December 17.

Councillor Liz Welsh says the party begins at 10am Saturday morning with the unveiling of a new mural and two interpretive signs commemorating the events.

"Oil Springs is hopefully going to be declared a world UNESCO site next year," says Welsh. "We need to be ready to tell our part of that story too, so we're really excited about that."

The town crier will officially open the celebration at the Farmer's Market with free cake and a BBQ.
