'Don't Wait, Check The Date' This Fire Prevention Week

Fire prevention week is underway.

It was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.

Sarnia Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus says this years theme is "Don't Wait, Check the Date."

Bus says most people do know they have to change the batteries in smoke alarms, but many may not be aware that the alarms themselves only last about ten years.

"There's a manufacture date usually at the bottom of the smoke alarm," says Bus. "The ones purchased in the last couple of years, they obviously should be okay still, quite often they have a sticker on them and they say replace by."

Sarnia fire officials will have a safety display at Lambton Mall October 11-14.

Also for Fire Prevention Week, Sarnia Fire and Rescue will be hosting an open house at the East St. station Wednesday, October 12, from 4 to 7pm.
