Johnson Leads Legionnaires Past First Place Vipers

Jorgen Johnson stopped 42 shots to lead the Sarnia Legionnaires (8-6-0-0) to a hard fought 4-1 win over the first place LaSalle Vipers (11-3-0-3) in GOJHL hockey play Thursday.

Legionnaires forward Zach Vanderwal opened the scoring seven minutes into the first period with his first goal of the season on a bad angle shot.

Cameron Rannie potted his first career GOJHL goal five minutes later, and Joey Zappa notched a shorthanded goal to make it 3-0 after one.

LaSalle's Liam MacDougall scored a powerplay goal midway through the second but that's as close as the Vipers would come. Jarret Marks sealed the Legionnaire victory with an empty netter with about 20 seconds remaining in the game.

The Legionnaires killed off six of seven penalties against and scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

The Legoinnaires' next game is Saturday night in Strathroy.
