Sarnia's mayor wants closed door in-camera meetings recorded. Mike Bradley is asking city council to instruct staff to develop the policies and procedures needed to implement the audio recording of closed door in-camera meetings as soon as possible. "What is happening across the province is there are many examples of councils meeting and all they do is take the minutes, yet they're meeting for hours and hours," says Bradley. "There should be a record for the Ombudsman if there's an investigation on what exactly was said. Not what 8 or 9 people believe was said." Bradley says over the years he's witnessed the confusion leaving an in-camera meeting. "What this does is ensure the public's interest is protected." Three years ago the former Ombudsman recommended that all Ontario municipalities record all meetings, open or closed. Mayor Bradley says it's now becoming a common practice and he's urging Sarnia council to do the same by the end of the year.
