Former Kinsmen Centre Site In Sarnia Eyed For Residential Development

The City of Sarnia has submitted an application to change the official plan and zoning of the lands at 656 Lakeshore Rd. from open space to urban residential.

Director of Planning and Building Alan Shaw says redeveloping the 2 acre property, by Baxter Park near Colborne Rd., for single detached residential dwelling lots is proposed.

"We have had interest from the community," says Shaw. "We've also had interest from local developers in regards to acquiring some of the lands."

Shaw says the city plans to demolish the former Oakwood elementary school in the new year.

A public hearing of City Council is scheduled January 16 at 4pm in council chambers at city hall.

Anyone wishing to speak to the applications is asked to notify the city clerk by noon on January 11.

City council declared the lands surplus in November and directed staff to proceed with its sale.

User-groups and tenants were relocated when the building was closed due to mould and related safety concerns.
