The Hub Hopes To Open Soon

It's hoped construction on a new central location for homeless or at-risk youth will wrap up by month's end.

The Hub will be centrally located at the east end of St. Luke's United Church on Wellington St. near Indian Rd.

Project co-chair Teri Thomas-Vanos says they're expanding the kitchen area and providing showers as well as a secure entry.

"We're increasing the size of some of the rooms to create a commercial kitchen for kids to learn how to cook as well as have a hot meal there every day," says Thomas-Vanos.

"The Hub will give those youth a place to come to connect with resources and support offered by 21 local partners we have available. We hope to have a clearer picture of what the need is."

There are no immediate plans to offer a housing component although that could come in the future.

"It will close round 9pm each evening, so it's not a residence by any means. It's a place where 16 to 24-year-olds can come to have their needs met and have the social and peer support so critical to that developmental stage," says Thomas-Vanos.

Thomas-Vanos says there's still a need for a computer room, and a primary health care room for a nurse practitioner.
