Ice Fishing Derby Cancelled

The Bluewater Anglers' annual February Ice Fishing Derby has been cancelled.

First VP Ed Holubowicz says it's due to lack of safe access to Sarnia Bay caused by the removal of the old boat launch and ongoing construction.

He says it's disappointing to have to cancel the event after 12 years.

"It's not a fundraiser, it's more of a community event that we put on for people that have maybe never had an ice fishing experience," says Holubowicz. "We drill a hole for them, give them some reels and a rod and show them what it's all about. It's on a family fun free fishing weekend when you don't need a licence."

The annual Salmon Derby, which runs April 28 to May 7 could also be impacted if the ramp to Sarnia Bay Marina is not complete.

The event won't be cancelled, however, anglers might need to access the river from different spots.
