Hotel Owner Can't Cope With Hydro Costs

The owner of Sarnia's Versatile Inn on London Line is actively seeking a buyer, because she can't afford the electricity bills.

Merhu Malik, who purchased the hotel three years ago, told Ontario's NDP Leader Andrea Horwath Tuesday afternoon her hydro bill can be as much as $8,000 a month.

"Hydro is too high for me," said Malik. "I'm a small business. I have 50 rooms, most of the time only 12 are rented, or 20 or 25. The rest are all empty. Once someone's gone we turn off the heat, lights, everything is off."

Horwath, who unveiled her party's plan Monday to lower hydro rates by up to 30%, said business and families should be able to build a good life in Sarnia and not feel like things are slipping away.

"We have immediate steps that we will take when we form a government in 2018 that will get those bills down," said Horwath. "We also have longer term plans that will help fix our system and get it back into public control."

Horwath has similar stops planned in Chatham, London and Woodstock this week to promote the NDP plan.
