The City of Sarnia has presented its first ever bravery award.
Matt Gordon received the award after helping save the life of a man and his dog whose boat capsized in Lake Huron near Riding Club Lane last September.
"I must say that I would have never ever done what I did, had Sarnia fire not been there," Gordon said as he accepted his award. "I would like to say that myself, and I can speak for this entire community, we are forever grateful for all that you do for us. I was a part of something like this for one moment of my entire life... but these men and women do it every single day."
The award is modeled after a similar one in London. Recipients are decided upon by emergency officials and presented with a plaque at City Hall.
"He risked his life to rescue someone and their animal," said Mayor Mike Bradley. "From talking to different members of the fire service, it was extraordinary."
Gordon is the son of former Sarnia Mayor Ron Gordon.
