An animal cruelty investigation underway in Dawn-Euphemia Township may cost the Sarnia and District Humane Society well over $50,000.
Over 60 livestock, all suffering from severe neglect and cruelty, were immediately removed from a property Wednesday when a warrant was executed by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) with the help of Lambton OPP.
Many other livestock were found dead on the property.
Executive Director Donna Pyette says local farmers and the veterinarians have played a key role in helping transport and shelter the animals still alive.
"We really want to thank the farming community," says Pyette. "Their incredible support over the last couple of days has been just fantastic and so needed. We would be in big trouble if it weren't for their help."
However, Pyette says all of the animals are under veterinary care at the local farms and those costs will come out of the shelter's operating budget.
"Most will have a long recovery period. But, it's our hope that most will recover at this point. Obviously charges are pending as the investigation continues. We always look to recoup [costs] that way, but other than that it's really just a plea out to the public [for donations]."
