Public Input Sought On Transit Taxation

The City of Sarnia wants to know how you feel about the current Sarnia Transit taxation system.

Finance Director Lisa Armstrong says right now conventional bus service is part of a special area tax levy. Only those within 450 m of a bus route pay for the taxation on that service.

Bus fares collected, she says, do not cover the total cost of providing the service, so council has asked staff to review the taxation system.

"The special levy could be removed," says Armstrong. "That would mean it would just go into general taxation like all of our other services, fire services, snow removal, that type of thing. It could just be collapsed and the special area removed, or it could remain like it is."

Public input will be received until June 23 and a public meeting will be held June 19 at 3pm in the council chambers.

Further information, including the survey, can be found at www.city.sarnia.on.ca
