Local Athletes Eyeing Medals At National Championship

Several local athletes are in medal contention heading into the final few days of the Canadian Track and Field Championship in Ottawa.

Johnny Vanos won the men's under 20 discus qualifier with a throw of 43.15 m, the final is scheduled for 12:30pm Friday afternoon. He'll compete in shot put final 5pm Saturday, and the hammer throw final at 9:30am Sunday morning

Mackenzie Mullen competes in the final for women's under 20 discus final at 11am Friday morning, she'll be in the hammer throw final at 12pm Saturday.

Marissa Mueller is in the under 20 javelin final at 12pm on Saturday. Sebastian Smith will look to medal at the under 20 high jump final at 11am Saturday. Both Mueller and Smith medalled in their respective events at the OFSAA Track and Field Championships in Belleville.

Vanos, Mullen, Mueller and Smith are all members for the Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track & Field Club.

Corruna's Derek Drouin has withdrawn from the high jump competition because of an achilles tendon issue. The 27-year-old says he wants to ensure he is ready to compete in next month's world championships.
