UPDATE: Firefighter Injured While Battling Blaze In Galley Of Docked Ship

A Sarnia firefighter remained in hospital Friday being treated for a leg injury suffered while fighting a blaze aboard the bulk carrier Ojibway Thursday.

Over 20 Sarnia and Point Edward firefighters responded to the north slip at the end of Exmouth St. shortly after 4:30pm.

City Platoon Chief Randy McDonald says a firefighter, responding to a fire in the ship’s galley, was injured in a fall.

He says shipboard fires are very difficult to handle.

“The spaces are a lot more cramped and it’s very difficult to ventilate the heat out so it makes fighting the fire a lot more difficult,” says McDonald.

McDonald says the fire that caused $80,000 to $100,000 damage was the result of unattended cooking.

There were no injuries among the 29 crew members aboard the bulk carrier.
