Boaters Rescued On St. Clair River

Point Edward Fire and Rescue and the Canadian Coast Guard responded to a call of an overturned vessel on the St. Clair River south of the Blue Water Bridge Sunday evening.

Fire officials say when they arrived, all persons on board were on top of the overturned vessel wearing personal flotation devices.

The boat was towed to safety out of the shipping channel and righted.

In the waters near Wasaga Beach over the weekend, two men, one from Collingwood and the other from Caledon, drowned.

There have already been 54 drowning related fatalities in Ontario this year, six more than at this time last year.

The Canadian Lifesaving Society says 80% of boating fatalities involve people who are not wearing life jackets.
