An Arkona trucking company and a Wyoming farmer have been fined for the unlicensed disposal of deadstock following a large barn fire early this year in Plympton-Wyoming.
The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) says Ernie Herrington Excavating, Trucking and Sanitation and Mike Huybers pleaded guilty in Sarnia Provincial Offences Court last month to one charge each under the Food Safety and Quality Act.
In a news release Tuesday, the ministry says each were fined $2,500 including Victim Fine Surcharges by Justice of the Peace Marsha Miskokomon.
The ministry says, following a fire January 31 that killed some 4,000 pigs, a total of 11 dump truck loads of deadstock were transported to landfill from the Huybers' farm on Confederation Line without the required licence being obtained.
OMAFRA says the proper management of dead animals is crucial to maintaining public confidence in the province's food production and food safety systems.
