The building, with niches for funeral urns, overlooks Bear Creek and is surrounded by a garden and water feature.

Mayor John McCharles says it was built to accommodate an increase in the number of cremations locally.

"We are pleased to have this at Hillsdale so that there is another option not only for individuals during the planning process, but also for families to spend time in peaceful reflection," says McCharles.

He says it's the first of four planned at Hillsdale. The remaining three will be added as required.

Each columbarium contains 48 niches and each niche can hold up to two cremations.

The Town of Petrolia has set aside funding for the past five years to restore the historic cemetery.
