Gas Bill Relief Coming

Just ahead of another home heating season, natural gas prices are poised to fall.

As of October 1, gas prices will drop about $51 a year or 6% for area Union Gas customers.

It's welcome news after gas prices soared earlier this year. On January 1, prices spiked by $122 a year for Sarnia-Lambton customers.

Utility spokesperson Andrea Stass says more than half the increase was due to the Ontario government's cap-and-trade program.

"We have had several increases over the past year so I think this is a good welcome change," says Stass. "With the change, it means the total bill for an average residential customer is about $800 a year, so when you compare that to other forms of energy, natural gas still is the most affordable form of energy for heating your home and heating your hot water."

Union Gas adjusts the rates it charges its customers every three months.
