It's Official, Sarnia Sears To Close

It's official, Sarnia's Sears store will close.

An Ontario judge granted Sears Canada permission to liquidate its remaining 130 stores -- including Sarnia's -- on Friday.

Superior Court Justice Glenn Hainey approved the company's motion to liquidate after hearing that no viable buyer had been found, despite weeks of discussion.

Hainey said he was satisfied there was no viable alternative.

The company said in a statement Tuesday that it expected liquidation sales to commence no earlier than October 19 and continue for ten to 14 weeks.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley described the announcement as a major loss to the community, which will have a significant impact on Lambton Mall.

The closure puts 92 part-time and 16 full-time employees out of a job in Sarnia. Around 12,000 workers are impacted across the country.
