Sarnia Firefighters To Continue 24-Hour Shifts

Sarnia’s 121 professional firefighters will continue to work 24-hour shifts for another year.

City council has extended the three-year shift trial, due to the status of the collective bargaining process.

The Sarnia Professional Firefighters Association and City of Sarnia are working to settle a new collective agreement through interest arbitration

The direction was made in July when both parties agreed they had reached an impasse.

Corporate Manager of Human Resources Jim Crawford said at the time that he expected it to be one year at the earliest before an interest arbitrator was available.

He also said both parties could continue to discuss the contract and opt for conciliation at anytime.

The current contract expired December 31, 2016.
