Equal Billing Customers Paying More

Union Gas customers on equal billing payments are paying an average of $120 a month, which is up about $40.

That's leaving some customers confused, seeing as though gas prices dropped about 6% on October 1.

Utility spokesperson Andrea Stass says rates for customers on equal billing were set for the year in September, before the price adjustment.

She says the increase also accounts for four price hikes over the last year.

"There were some rate increases last year, they were offset by warm weather so that is why we didn't change the equal billing payments throughout the course of the year, you were basically protected from those rate changes, up until now," says Stass. "The good news is that rates are going down, however we won't be readjusting equal billing payments for that just now. We will look at the winter that we have and rate changes throughout the coming year to determine whether or not we need to adjust the current payments."

Stass says in August, equal billing customers are credited or charged the difference between the instalments paid and actual usage.
