Union Gas Storage Marks Milestone

Union Gas is celebrating the diamond anniversary of its underground storage for natural gas in Dawn-Euphemia.

On October 28, 1942, natural gas was injected into a naturally-occurring, depleted pinnacle reef formation at Dawn, marking the birth of Canada's first commercially successful underground storage pool.

Business development, storage and transmission Vice President Jim Redford says since then the Dawn "hub" has become the country's largest integrated natural gas storage facility and is an integral part of North America's gas infrastructure.

"Over 75 years we've grown significantly," says Redford. "We started with a 5-billion cubic ft pool. Now Dawn is over 275-billion cubic ft."

Redford says over 100 companies actively buy and sell natural gas from Dawn, making it the second most physically traded hub in North America.
