YMCA Looks To Expand In Watford

The YMCA is looking to further expand its reach in southwestern Ontario.

The organization recently made a presentation to Warwick Township council, as the municipality looks at options for the aging Centennial Hall.

Mayor Todd Case says the YMCA could be a good fit in the community, although council hasn't decided what direction to go.

"It was an information piece for now," says Case. "They do supply services to communities around us like Lambton Shores and Parkhill. So, it was good information for us to see what they could offer and it's something for us to consider in the future as well."

An engineering report estimated it would cost about $525,000 to upgrade Centennial Hall and about $1.8-million to build a 6,000 sq ft replacement.

An official cost estimate is expected in the next few weeks.

Watford celebrated Canada's 100th birthday in 1967 by opening Centennial Hall.

Meanwhile, the YMCA is also exploring taking over operation of the Oil Heritage District Community Centre in Petrolia.
