New Pilot Program Unveiled At St. Matthew Catholic School

The Ontario Nutrition Program Southwest Region will provide nine schools throughout Lambton County, with enough fruits and vegetables to serve the entire school for eight weeks through its "Fresh to Your Desk" project.

Lambton Public Health Student Nutrition Coordinator Leslie Palimaka says it's part of a centralized food procurement system being explored by the program.

"Fresh to Your Desk will increase the amount of vegetables and fruits students receive, while lowering food costs and saving volunteer time," says Palimaka.

The goal is to put 88,000 fruits and vegetables into the hands of Lambton County students by December 8.

The program is also being funded by Noelle's Gift Charitable Foundation and Healthy Kids Community Challenge - Lambton Partners.

Lambton's Student Nutrition Program provides free health food to students every school day and is financially supported by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services.
