Winds of up to 70 km/h whipped 30 cm to 40 cm of snow into huge drifts, resulting in whiteout conditions in -25 C wind chills.
Lambton County declared a state of emergency and OPP had to use snowmobiles to try to rescue motorists. Military Griffon helicopters were also called in to assist.
Stranded travellers were put up in private homes and warming centres.
It would take the better part of a week to remove hundreds of trucks and cars and clear huge snow drifts that made the 402 and other roads across the district impassable.
