Benzene Release At NOVA Chemicals

The cold weather is getting the blame for an incident Thursday evening at NOVA Chemicals Corunna site.

The company says a drain line froze and cracked due to extreme weather temperatures, resulting in the release of benzene.

NOVA says the release was immediately isolated and air quality monitoring at multiple locations, including the perimeter, ranged from trace to no off-site readings.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, as well as other community partners, were notified.

NOVA says they continue to investigate the incident in an effort to prevent similar events in the future.
