Man Wanted For Assaulting An Officer

Sarnia police are looking for a suspect in connection with an assault of a city officer.

Constable John Sottosanti says the incident happened around 2:30am Monday in the area of Brock St. and Confederation St.

He says an officer in the area spotted a man riding a bike without a headlight.

"The officer was able to stop the cyclist at a local variety store in the area," says Sottosanti. "The suspect verbally identified himself as Trevor Sebring, but after much reluctance, the suspect pulled out a piece of ID that did not match the name given verbally. It was determined the suspect was actually Trevor Shawn Chaput, 29 years of age, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for breaching probation."

Constable Sottosanti says when the officer tried to make an arrest, there was a struggle and the officer was pushed over a parking block.

"The officer was sore but didn't sustain any significant injuries," says Sottosanti.

He says the officer fell to the ground and the suspect made off on foot, leaving behind his backpack where officers allegedly found various forms of drug paraphernalia and shotgun shells.

Police say a second warrant has been issued for Chaput's arrest on four counts of breach of probation, possession of ammunition contrary to a probation order, public mischief, resisting a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.

Anyone with information as to his whereabouts should call police at 519-344-8861 or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers.
