City Shuts Down Boarding House

Sarnia council has rejected a rezoning application for a rooming or boarding house on Exmouth St., that's allegedly been operating illegally for the past 15 years.

Seven bedrooms, each rented individually, exist in the home at 1471 Exmouth St. near London Rd.

Director of Planning Alan Shaw told council that charges for operating illegally are being pursued through provincial offences court against the owner.

The news was welcomed by Councillor Brian White.

"I'm glad to hear that there's been some action taken, and again, I suggest that somehow we figure out a way to signal to the community that this type of non-compliance is not to be rewarded," says White.

Shaw says as a result of Monday's vote, no more than three people may pay for accommodations in the home without separate cooking and washroom facilities.
