CIBC To Close Thedford's Only Bank

Another small Lambton community is losing its only financial institution.

The CIBC branch in Thedford will close November 22, much to the dismay of Jeff Zavitz, a former municipal councillor and owner of Zavitz General Store in Thedford.

He says seniors will be hard hit, having to drive 21 km to Forest to do their banking.

"It's hard on the seniors who don't commute and it's hard on businesses that rely on the bank to make your deposits," he says. "It gives the town a poor image because it's one more thing that we've lost."

Zavitz fears more rural banks will close as more people move to online banking.

The bank is hosting a public information meeting on May 31 at the Legacy Recreation Centre at 7pm.

He says the two employees will be informed of their options before the fall closure.
