Sarnia Fire Issues Reminder About Digital Device Dangers

Phones, laptops and tablets have sparked fires around the world, and Sarnia Fire and Rescue doesn't want you to become a victim.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis says keeping your device on a hard surface is one thing you can do to prevent a fire.

"Never charge a laptop or a phone on a bed or a pillow because there's nowhere for the heat to go, and on those soft surfaces, they can heat up and eventually catch fire," he says. "When your charging something, make sure it's on hard surface, like a nightstand, dresser or desk."

Otis says it's hard to know just how many fires are caused by electronic devices locally.

"I can't think of specific fires where it's happened here for sure, but a lot of the time with fires everything is so burnt up after the fact that you may never know for sure that's what happened. But it definitely does happen."

He says some after-market chargers can pose more of threat because sometimes they're not made to the same standards as those that come with the phone.

Although he can't say for sure there's no risk when a device isn't charging, Otis says they do produce more heat when charging.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue have used social media in the past to warn residents about the dangers of electronic devices causing fires.
