Council eyes seniors campus concept

A seniors "campus" in Simcoe County has caught the attention of Lambton County councillors.

Georgian Village is a state-of-the-art, 60+ adult lifestyle community that's run by the municipality and offers a variety of housing options and services so people can age in place.

Councillor Anne Marie Gillis said she would like to see a similar project developed in Sarnia-Lambton.

"It's a new and novel way of creating homes for senior citizens within a complex," said Gillis. "But the homes are not really traditional, like the institutionalized ones we have right now, and Lambton Meadowview is a good example. What they are, are individual homes all connected by trails and walkways."

She said it could be perfect for Alzheimer's/dementia patients because the community is set up with everything you could need.

"The whole point is, we want to have seniors living in place and as active members of our community as a whole," said Gillis. "So, there would be grocery stores. There would be amenities that people would need, like pharmacies, community centers, all contained within the campus."

Gillis said she was really struck by the number of jobs created.

County staff are working on a report with more information on the concept and plan to present it at a county committee meeting later this month.
