Point Edward recycling costs skyrocket

Point Edward's recycling costs will more than double in the next two years.

CAO Jim Burns said the village budgeted $40,000 this year, after spending $37,000 in 2017, and about $25,000 in 2016.

Next year, he thinks they will have to budget about $60,000.

"We didn't have a whole lot of choice in the matter," said Burns. "There was one bid submitted. We worked with the City of Sarnia, Aamjiwnaang, and St. Clair Township. Our cost increase is astronomical."

Burns said they talked to MPP Bob Bailey to see if Doug Ford's Tories will follow up on a proposal by the former Liberal government.

"They had a plan in place where they wanted to transfer the cost of recycling over to the producer," he said. "We asked the MPP what the plans were for this government. He didn't have an answer for us. We were bringing this new information to him, so he was going to try to find some answers for us."

Burns said he thinks some of the increase in the contract with Halton Recycling (Emterra), is due to skyrocketing transportation costs.
