UPDATE: Kidney Walk raises over $35,000

The 15th annual Kidney Walk saw 120 walkers in Cantara Park Sunday.

This year's event raised over $35,000 to add to the over $300,000 raised locally to date.

Kidney Foundation Executive Director Elaine Hayter said this year's number will probably reach $40,000 by the end of the month as donations continue to come in.

"There's a number of dollars that goes directly to the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), and all of our patients are treated through LHSC, as well as being treated here locally at Bluewater Health."

The 5K was one of 75 walks that took place across the country Sunday.

Hayter said the disease affects 1 in 10 Canadians.

"Whether it's people that have been affected through diabetes, or through dealings with high blood pressure, or sometimes it's a hereditary disease. So there are many different ways someone can develop kidney disease."
